When a Toothache is an Emergency

A toothache becomes a dental emergency if it is accompanied by severe pain that doesn't subside with over-the-counter pain relievers, swelling in the face, jaw, or neck, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or discharge of pus from the gums. In these cases, seek immediate dental care to prevent serious complications like the spread of infection.

Home Remedies for Toothache Relief

While waiting for your dental appointment, you can try these home remedies for temporary toothache relief: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation and clean the area. Gently floss to remove any food particles or debris trapped between teeth. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed on the label. Avoid placing aspirin or any painkiller directly on the gums, as it may cause burns.

What to Do Before Your Toothache Appointment

Before coming in for your toothache appointment, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and gently floss to remove any trapped food or debris. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen to manage discomfort, but avoid alcohol, tobacco, and very hot or cold foods that might worsen the pain. Make a note of when the pain started, its severity, and any triggers to help with diagnosis.

Post-Appointment Care After Toothache Treatment

After your toothache treatment, follow your dentist's specific instructions. Generally, manage any residual pain with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, alone or combined with acetaminophen. Avoid chewing on the treated side for a few days, especially if you had a root canal or extraction. Don't smoke, rinse vigorously, or use a straw, as these can disrupt healing. Eat soft foods and maintain gentle oral hygiene. If pain persists or worsens, contact your dentist immediately.
